DMIT Concept

Shiladhish Art & Research Institute has carved a niche for itself as one of the leading institutes for classical dance training in Mumbai. It has been instrumental in propagating and popularising the magnificent classical dance-form of Bharatanatyam amongst the cross -cultural youth of the metropolis for over 40 years.
At the Institute, training of the student is geared towards developing her aesthetic and creative sensibility. A firm belief that dance is a composite art that cannot be learnt in isolation has led to a unique, holistic and comprehensive approach in its training. This includes a very systematic training in the traditional Pandanallur style of Bharatanatyam along with training in tala, nattuvangam and choreography. While an in-depth study of the shastras equips a student with deeper insights into the art, the integration of dance with yoga provides a strong foundation for further exploration and personal growth. Technical perfection, imaginative choreography and aesthetically sleek presentations remain the hallmark of all its creative explorations.
Committed to the propagation of the artistic traditions, in an effort to de-mystify the classical arts and create a larger audience base the institute hosts an annual performing arts festival - NRITYAM. In 2007, it also spear-headed an art-awareness campaign- A I M (Art Initiative Movement) providing a platform for the audience to engage in a dialogue with artistes and an exposure to diverse world cultures and artforms.

The institutes conducts regular classes in Bharatanatyam in traditional Pandanallur bani. This style attributed to the great master Sri Meenakshi Sundaram Pillai is extolled as the ‘ Father of Bharatanatyam ‘. This style is characterised by intense & distinct adavus (basic steps) and complexity of its rhythmic permutation, clarity & precision. Graceful , stylized movements & suble expressions (abhinaya) merge with the melody as body & soul creating an energetic yet soothing effect.
An emphasis on ‘focused learning’ in the ambience of a ‘gurukula’ sets it apart from most other classes! The teacher-student ratio of 1: 6 has resulted in nurturing students with great care, attention & love. A mutual bond of trust, love and respect carves the way for a long term process of joyful commited & disciplined learning that the classical arts demand !

The training is structured at 4 levels:
